“Helen and Gwen Sitting on a Coral”

"Helen and Gwen on the Coral"
“Helen and Gwen on the Coral”

Today’s work was Helen and Gwen dressed up and sitting on the coral waiting for the wagon to take them to town. The nearest town was Snow, North Dakota.  They were always called the “girls” even when they were elderly.  I remember this clearly as my Mother would refer to them as the girls on the ranch and when we finally went to visit, I was so disappointed to see the girls were older than my Mom.

The Scrap Book Project is sponsored by the Art House and consists of being sent a sketchbook by Art House and then you make the art around a theme.  The theme this time is “Everyone you know”.  Then Art House is taking all the sketchooks on a 6 city tour to galleries and museums across the U.S.  The goal of the exhibiion is to encourage anyone to create artwork and build a collective of sketch books made by artists from all over the world.

“Hospital Elf Eco”

"Hospital Elf, Eco"Daily Painting is a “Hospital Elf named Eco”, drawn on my Moleskin sketch pad waiting for an eye appointment at the hospital. I always carry my sketch pad and am never bored when the appointment time runs late. 5″x7″ colored pencils.
Well known Elves appear in J.R.R.Tolkien, and The Lord of the Rings.

Johnson Creek, Portland, Oregon

Have you ever been to new places and really emerge yourself in their energy, beauty, and completely fill up your senses with nature’s spiritual elements?  That is the life of a Plein Air Painter.  For this painting I painted for the Johnson Creek Watershed Council along Johnson Creek.  The purpose was to raise consciousness for the transformation of Johnson Creek from the dreaded “flooding of Johnson Creek” to the happy joyous enjoyment of the improvements made for the many families, cyclist, and of course artists.  What a wonderful day to be part of this awareness.  I am so grateful.

“Landscape with Color Notes”

My daily painting today was an interesting exercise in color notes.  This is a term used by Henry Henshe of  the Cape School of Art in Provincetown.  This link explains more about the Cape School of Art  and founder,             Charles Hawthorne and many other artist who attended the school. Lois Griffel talks about the school on her website and I quote from her website. “My eyes were opened to seeing ‘the light” by the great artist and teacher, Henry Hensche. Hensche dedicated his life’s work to the principles of Impressionism and did not consider it a separate painting approach. I believe, as he did, that Impressionism is the universal foundation of beautiful color in all contemporary painting today.”

I enjoy studing the artist who have their roots in this school and to observe how it influenced their own personal work.  My daily painting today was to take one of Susan Sarbacks color notes exercises and expand it into a landscape showing the steps explained in her book.

Todays Daily is a Colored Pencil Drawing “Clayton”, for the Art House Gallery Project.  Theme “Everyone We Know”. 3.5″x5″ .

“Jackson’s Bottom Wetland”

Daily Painting today was at the Jackson’s Bottom Wetland in Hillsboro.  Jackson Bottom Wetland’s Preserve is a 725-acre wildlife preserve located within the city limits of Hillsboro, Oregon.

“Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens”

"Iris Gardens" Woodland, Washington

Its only been a week and here I find myself surrounded by other Plein-Air Painters in the beautiful Hulda Klager’s Lilac Gardens in Woodland, Washington. Just writting these words brings a energizing feeling to my fingers. How else can a person really get t o know a place unless they paint it. As I sat there painting this scene, I heard birds calling, and the wind touching my face. Some of the painters in our group felt the wind was blowing them away but where I sat it was just a gentle breeze.

Daily studio work

"River Park Villa"

"River Park Villa"

Daily studio work today was on the River Villa Park painting done in Jeff Gunn’s Plein Air Class.  I love the orange bridge and the composition. This painting is in progress.

“Sunset Seascape”

Sunset Seascape

Sunset Seascape

This is a seascape I started sometime ago. My technique and style has changed. It was interesting to see the changes. I am happier now but feel the technique was smoother before but really didn’t feel like it was mine. I used the color notes over the old piece. Will probably add a rock on the lower left side. 8″x10″ stretched canvas. And overall I am happy with the direction I am taking now it just feels good and free.

“Cat in the Window”

Daily today was a pastel still life from my kitchen table.  I had set up the still life and my cat jumped up on the window and I painted him in as well.  Daily painting has brought about many special moments like this.

Daily Painting to me is  about what’s going on in my world of art: daily paintings,  art, my process, and my thoughts about art in general.  I have a commitment with two other painters to email a daily painting by 9:00pm every day.  There are no rules and this creative penatration of daily painting has greatly inflenced  my daily life and art has started to grow in tremendous and unexpected ways.

“Kokopelli Vase” Still Life

"Kokopelli Vase" Still LifeToday I finished up The Kokopelli Vase Still Life. Oil, pallet knife, on RayMar Canvas Board 9″x12″. I really like this method of the pallet knife and color notes. It seems to suit me and I feel like I’m getting into a zone with it…and can go deeper and more refined as I go..any way it feels good.

Forensics Sketch

"Forensics Sketch"My daily painting is a sketch from a resource that talks about how forensics artists make a likeness from a skeleton. It is an interesting science and very helpful to the artist learning about proportions of the facial features. I think I finally understand cheekbones.

“U.S. Capitol, Washington DC” Daily Painting

"U.S. Capitol, Washington D.C."We live in such interesting times. I took the subject of the week from
“Different Strokes from Different Folks” This is a internet site where the site host posts a photograph and artists use their Artist interpretation to create wonderful works of art. There is 45 to 65 artist that post. It is very interesting to see all the different takes on the same subject. The subject for this week was “The U.S. Capitol, Washington DC”

The U.S. Capitol, Washington DC…The painting practically painted itself…The sun in the bottom of the painting has a small right hand of one of my young students. She was happy to have her hand used. The painting is about hope for the future, hope for the young generation, and hope for the next seven generations. The hand wanted to be painted green. But it does look a little like E.T. ‘s hand. When a painting talks to me like this one I let it have its way and don’t try to second guess. As one of my daily painting friends said “when you are creating everyday you don’t have time to get precious”. Do it and get it out there. Make way for another day tomorrow.

“Grateful for Eyes”

Grateful for Eyes

Grateful for Eyes

I have just been relieved of a stress. I went to have a routine check of my eyes and the optometrist said I have glaucoma and possible eye damage. He scared me to death. and then of course I couldn’t get an appointment with Ophthalmology for three weeks. And today I had that appointment and everything is well within range and if I did come down with glaucoma at a later date it is easily treated. The optometrist must of had his reasons to explain what he thought was a condition and I am extremely grateful to be ok now but one should always remember words can be delivered in many ways and it is always better to be positive with people. Sitting in my car looking at the Arched Bridge over the Willamette River I completed this drawing feeling very grateful for my eyes.

“River Park Villa”

River Villa Park

River Villa Park

Studio work on painting started at River Park Villa on Saturday.  I refined the shapes more with more color notes asking the questions of every painting.  Is this shape duller, brighter, lighter, or darker in color.  The painting will get more studio work later.
