I worked on a commission I started some time ago. This is for an internet site inviting women to share their spiritual stories. It is acrylic underpainting with oil glazes. I have the Sistine Chapel in the background. It was a good project to work on, bringing out many of my past artistic techniques. I changed the face and don’t like the new look so will work on it anotherday. Every paint stroke isn’t always an improvement and it is hard to accept that one has to wipe out what you have just spent a lot of time on.
Daily Painting today was a completion of part one of the Winter Portrait Project. The Project is sponsored by the Portland Plein Air and Studio Painter. Each participant was assigned a partner and then we are to create a painting using live sittings , photographs or a combination of both and paint a self-portrait. The goal of the project is to stimulate painting through the bad weather months and encourage growth and development of artists through portrait /figure work.
I Painted the portrait using my new Christmas Gift to myself, Unison Pastels, which I purchased at ASW Art Supply warehouse. They had a extra 10% off coupon and their shipping is always a flat rate. I also used Wallis Paper cut to 14″x18″. The Wallis paper is wonderful for pastels. Wallis Brand of sanded pastel paper is designed by Kitty Wallis and is obtainable from online stores. You can buy it by the roll, or in pads of various sizes and cut it as needed.

A day of painting and figuring on the “Tip Toes Painting”. The design will be folded in half for the CD cover so I have to figure the layout carefully so it will fold correctly. I am using a black acrylic underpainting over the orange. This method is a way of doing a value study before getting into color. The dancer on the cover is Karen of “Shooting Stars” daughter. She wanted her to be in the picture. She is so cute and full of joy a perfect model.
The creative flow of Daily Painting today found me creating a fall landscape. I was unable to go outside so selected several reference photos of the English Landscape and put together this canvas. 6″x8″ on Ray-Mar canvas board. As defined below by Wikipedia, the English Landscape, “crossing county boundaries.” Today in the School Studio at our Art School it felt like I was exploring this idea.
Historic characterisation is described by the Council for British Archaeology as “a way of going beyond intuition to get beneath the skin of a place and look at its essential qualities and character”[2]. The historic landscape characterisation programme does not restrict itself to historic buildings, ornamental landscapes and purely “archaeological” features, but embraces other man made features such as hedges and managed woodland. It recognises that the landscape itself can be historic (in addition to historic features within it). Recognising the historic character of a landscape is intended to allow the landscape itself to be managed and protected within the planning regime operating in England. In most cases, characterisation is focused on an English county, although in some cases it is applied to a region crossing county boundaries.

I started on the layout for the new CD commission. It is called “TV to Broadway” for Shooting Stars. I painted the canvas Frosty Orange Acrylic and got the two figures and background stage figured out using white this time to create form. I had used black in “Tip Toes”. I am using acrylic for the underpainting to figure out all the details and then use oil glazes over the acrylic. I have found this method effective, especially when there are figures in the painting.

"Last Kite left Flying"
A Visual Encyclopedia created by artists.
I started a new project today with “Art House ” they are creating a completely user generated visual encyclopedia. There are two parts to it: submitting words and signing up to participate in order to visually represent the words. After signing up, I received five 3x3in canvases along with five randomly selected, user generated words to represent. At least one of my completed canvases will be featured in “The Art House Encyclopedia VOL. 1″ book.
“Art House is all about community. You don’t have to be a professional artist to participate in the exhibition. This project is about being creative and inspiring yourself and others. We want to bring artists together and give everyone a chance to show in galleries and other venues around the country!”
My first canvas is called “fly”. I remember as a child my local school had a kite flying contest. You had to make a kite and my dad and I made one out of the kitchen oilcloth tablecloth. When the exciting day came all the kids were there with their dads and their kites. Up, up went everyones kites but mine being heavy made of watercloth it just couldn’t make it up there to flywith all the rest of the colorful kites. My spirits were as low as the kite laying on the ground but my Dad wouldn’t give up. Then suddenly everything shifted a big wind came in with clouds heavy with rain and up went my beautiful kite and down came all the rest of kites. Theirs were made of lightweight paper and mine was the only one left flying . It was a great day for our kite and when reading my word as “fly” this image came to me. This is a oil sketch on canvas paper for the painting.

Today’s daily painting is a Colored Pencil Drawing “Hannah”, for the Art House Gallery Project. Theme “Everyone We Know”. 3.5″x5″ .
The Scrap Book Project is sponsored by the Art House and consists of being sent a sketchbook by Art House and then you make the art around a theme. The theme this time is “Everyone you know”. Then Art House is taking all the sketchooks on a 6 city tour to galleries and museums across the U.S. The goal of the exhibition is to encourage anyone to create artwork and build a collective of sketch books made by artists from all over the world.
Daily painting today is a colored pencil drawing of my Grandfather and Grandmother, Georgetta and Harry Kaspar. My Grandmother was born in Rock Rapids, Iowa and moved to North Dakota where she met and married my Grandfather. She was named Georgetta after her father, George, and mother Etta.
My Grandfather was the first sheriff of Dunn County in North Dakota. He enjoyed gardening and loved flowers later in life.
