Snow began to pile up on the skylights and the room took on an eerie ambiance as our students drew on their huge pads. The pads are 22×24. The oversized pads encourage students to think big and use their whole arm when creating.
I was deeply focused with the process of a seven-year-old boy as he created an eye on a wolf he had drawn in pastel. The wolf head was almost as big as he was tall and we were both nose to nose with his creative endeavors.
His focus was palpable as he stared at the white oval of the eye before him. I explained that we would go step by step in creating the eye.
First put the golden yellow in for the iris and surround it with your black charcoal pencil and then darken the pupil in the upper part of the eye.
Suddenly he leaped back ten feet YELLING, “It’s too real! It’s scaring me!!!
shocking the class and me!!!
I assured him once we rounded the eye more and put the sparkle of white in the iris he would look less real and scary. He did just that standing very close to me while he performed the next part of creating the eye. He then stood back with a sigh of relief and huge smile and today we laugh together about this all too real creative process.
This is an example of fear appearing real. How many times have we created or thought about starting something just to jump back saying it is too scary. I am too scared to go through with this action. In actuality we may be just around the corner or knocking at the door of the largest opportunity of our lives.
If a seven year old can face his fears and finish creating something that is scary can we? Or can we take inspiration from this story next time we are frightened by the prospect of creating something new or finishing something we started. Remember before you started there was nothing but a blank piece of paper and now you have an opportunity to bring something great and mighty into the world.
If you are feeling scared remember FEAR really is your creation of association of ideas and is False Evidence Appearing Real.
F false
E evidence
A appearing
R real
